The name Buckley is after William Buckley, an escapee from Sorrento who is reputed to have lived with the local aboriginal tribespeople.  Buckley built a permanent cottage with a chimney in this area and built a fixed kiddle across the creek to trap the mullet running out to sea.

Buckley Ward includes Grovedale, Breamlea, Barwon Heads and the semi-rural areas to the southern boundaries of the City.

Buckley Ward is bounded by the municipal boundary with Surfcoast Shire, Surfcoast Highway, Boundary Road, Rossack Drive, Waurn Ponds Creek, Barwon River and Bass Strait.
