The City is sub-divided into twelve wards with one Councillor elected to represent each ward.
 
 Ward No 1 - Beangala Ward

This ward is bounded by the Barwon River, Bawtree Road, Bellarine Highway, Banks Road, Bellarine Peninsula Railway, Andersons Road, Portarlington/Queenscliff Road, Coatsworth Road, Harvey Road, Ibbotson Street, State Nature Reserve, Port Phillip Bay, the City boundary with Queenscliff and Bass Strait. The townships of St Leonards and Ocean Grove and the future growth area north of Ocean Grove are included in the ward.
 
The name "Beangala", the homeland of the Bengali Clan of the Wathaurong Tribe.
 

 Ward No 2 - Coryule Ward

This ward is bounded by Bawtree Road, Port Phillip Bay, State Nature Reserve, Ibbotson Street, Harvey Road, Coatsworth Road, Portarlington/Queenscliff Road, Andersons Road, Bellarine Peninsula Railway, Banks Road and Bellarine Highway. The townships of Indented Head, Portarlington, Drysdale and Clifton Springs are included.
 
The name "Coryule" was the name of the home of Anne Drysdale, a pioneer squatter in this area.
 

 Ward No 3 - Cheetham Ward
This Ward is bounded by Bawtree Road, Barwon River, Wilsons Road, Portarlington Road and the projections of Boundary Road to Corio Bay. The ward includes the township of Leopold and the suburbs of Moolap, and parts of Whittington, Newcomb and St Albans Park.
 
The name "Cheetham" reflects the contribution to Geelong by Richard Cheetham, salt pioneer.
 
 Ward No 4 - Austin Ward
This ward is bounded by Wilsons Road, Portarlington Road and the projection of Boundary Road to Corio Bay, by the Bay to the projection of Glenleith Avenue, The Esplanade, Mercer Street to Keera Street overpass, Latrobe Terrace, McKillop Street, Moorabool Street, and Barwon River. The ward includes Breakwater, Thomson, parts of Newcomb, Whittington and St Albans Park, East Geelong, South Geelong, Geelong and the Central Business District.
 
The name "Austin" commemorates the contribution to Geelong by Elizabeth Austin, civic benefactor of homes and hospital.
 
 Ward No 5 - Brownbill Ward
This ward is bounded by the Barwon River, Shannon Avenue, Thompson Road, Victoria Street, Princes Highway and Edward Street to Corio Bay by the Bay to Glenleith Avenue, The Esplanade, Mercer Street to Keera Street overpass, Latrobe Terrace, McKillop Street, Moorabool Street. The ward includes part of South Geelong, Newtown, Geelong West, Drumcondra, Western Beach and Rippleside.
 
The name "Brownbill" commemorates the contribution of Fanny Brownbill who was the first female local member of the Legislative Assembly (1938-1946) and who was a tireless community worker for Geelong.
 
 Ward No 6 - Buckley Ward

This ward is bounded by the minicipal boundary with Surfcoast Shire, Surfcoast Highway, Boundary Road, Rossack Drive, Waurn Ponds Creek, Barwon River and Bass Strait. This ward includes Grovedale, Breamlea, Barwon Heads and the semi-rural areas to the southern boundaries of the City.
 
The name "Buckley" after William Buckley, an escapee from Sorrento who is reputed to have lived with the local aboriginal tribespeople. Buckley built a permanent cottage with a chimney in this area and built a fixed kiddle across the creek to trap the mullet running out to sea.
 

 Ward No 7 - Deakin Ward

This ward is bounded by the Barwon River, Barrabool Road, Bellevue Avenue, Cortland Drive, Glastonbury Drive, South Valley Road, Princes Highway to the Transmission Line on the northern alignment of Waurn Ponds Valley Parklands, south westerly via Waurn Ponds Creek to Rossacks Drive, Boundary Road, Surfcoast Highway to the municipal bounding with Surfcoast Shire. The ward includes Wandana Heights, Highton, Deakin University, Ceres, Mt Duneed and the semi rural areas to the western boundary of the City.
 
The name "Deakin" reflects the significant role played by Deakin University in the life of Geelong since its establishment in 1977.
 

 Ward No 8 - Kardinia Ward

This ward is bounded by South Valley Road, Cortland Drive, Bellevue Avenue, Barrabool Road, the Barwon River to Waurn Ponds Creek via the creek to the Transmission Line on the northern alignment of Waurn Ponds Valley Parklands, Princes Highway to South Valley Road. The ward includes the suburb of Belmont.
 
The name "Kardinia" is the aboriginal name for sunrise and was the name of the home of Alexander Thomson, first elected Mayor of Geelong.
 

 Ward No 9 - Kildare Ward
This ward is bounded by the western boundary of the City, the Moorabool River to the SEC Transmission Line, the Midland Highway, Shannon Avenue and Barwon River. The ward takes in part of Newtown, Manifold Heights, Herne Hill and Hamlyn Heights and the townships of Fyansford and Stonehaven.
 
The name "Kildare" was the original name for the area.
 
 Ward No 10 - Cowie Ward
This ward is bounded by Edward Street, Princes Highway, Victoria Street, Thompson Road, Midland Highway, Rollins Road, the Geelong/Ballarat Railway, Anakie Road, Donnybrook Road, Sparks Road, Geelong/Melbourne Railway, St Georges Road and Corio Bay. This ward includes Geelong North, Bell Park, Bell Post Hill, Norlane (part), North Shore and St Helens.
 
The name "Cowie" commemorates James Cowie an early land owner active in Local and State Government.
 
 Ward No 11 - Corio Ward
This ward is bounded by Matthews Road, Plantation Road, Princes Highway, Hovells Creek, Corio Bay, St Georges Road, Geelong/Melbourne Railway Line, Sparks Road, Thompson Road and Donnybrook Road. This ward includes the suburbs of Norlane and Corio.
 
The name "Corio" was an aboriginal name for the area.
 
 Ward No 12 - Windermere Ward

This ward is bounded by Princes Highway at its intersection with Hovells Creek, the Geelong/Melbourne Railway, Plantation Road, Matthews Road, Anakie Road, Geelong/Ballarat Railway, Rollins Road, Midland Highway, SEC Transmission Easement, Moorabool River to the western boundary of the City, the western and northern boundaries of the City and Corio Bay to Hovells Creek. This ward takes in the townships of Lara, Avalon, Anakie and Staughtonvale.
 
The name "Windermere" was the name of the home of the Fairbairn family of pioneers of this area.
