Equestrian fans in the Lara area have received a giant boost with the start of work on a new $100,000 administration centre and social clubrooms at Elcho Park.

Windermere Ward councillor Tony Ansett, who provided funding for the project out of his ward allocation, said the equestrian training area was currently used by the Corio and Moorabool Pony Club and the Westcoast Adult Riding Club.

"There are some sheds and small storage building on the site now being used by these clubs, but it's been a very basic arrangement and the club members deserve better," he said.

"This new facility will really put Lara and Elcho Park on the equestrian map.

"The foundations for the new centre have been dug, and it's full steam ahead," Cr Ansett said.

"When it's completed the new centre will have a large meeting room on the ground floor with kitchen and toilets incorporated.

"On the first floor there will be administration offices and a viewing area - a little like a mini grandstand, from where club members and guests will be able to get a great view of competitive events and club training."

Cr Ansett said a proposal was currently being considered under which the centre would be administered by a committee of management under the name of The Friends of Elcho Park.

He said he would be applying for further funding for the project during council deliberations leading up to the finalisation of the 2008-2009 City of Greater Geelong Budget.
