A new International Training Facility at Geelong Cricket Club's Kardinia Park home ground is to be named the 'David Kelly Training Facility' following Council's decision to approve a request from the club to this effect.

Sport and Recreation portfolio holder Cr John Mitchell said Council congratulated the club on the completion and opening of the facility, named after current club president David Kelly, the prime mover of the project.

The naming of the facility is in line with Council's Place Names Policy, with community consultation undertaken with key Kardinia Park stakeholders and affected local residents.

Cr Mitchell said that after gaining provisional club and Council support, Mr Kelly had secured funding of almost $500,000 for the project from the State Government, Cricket Victoria, business sponsorship and community donations.

He said that funding of $100,000 had been secured from the Federal Government for Phase Two of the project, under which lighting would be installed in the new training facility.
