Wounded Animals

To assist sick, orphaned or injured native wildlife, shelters such as the Wildlife Care Network or licensed shelter operators, have been established.

Where translocation of wildlife is necessary, the responsibility lies with NRE and the translocation is undertaken in accordance with statewide programs.

Responsible Pet Ownership

Stray or roaming dogs and cats can injure or kill native wildlife, defecate in neighbouring land, fight with other animals and cause tension in your neighbourhood.

Pet owners need to be responsible to prevent this impact and should:

  • Keep your pet in an enclosed area at night
  • Register your cat or dog with Council
  • Check with Council to find out more about your responsibilities and rights as a dog owner in the City of Greater Geelong
  • Desex your pet
  • Dispose of your pets defecation
  • Keep your dog on a leash at all times, except in "leash free" areas designated by Council
  • Always keep their pet on formed tracks when walking in parklands or bushland areas.
