Thank you Geelong. That's the message from the City of Greater Geelong and the Geelong Gallery, who thanks to
your support, has purchased View of Geelong.
The historic painting was offered exclusively to Geelong Gallery
by its owner Andrew Lloyd Webber, provided the
Gallery made an offer by 30 June. Mayor Cr Peter McMullin said the community fund raising campaign had been an outstanding success. "On behalf of the City of Greater Geelong congratulations and thank you to all the individuals and organisations whose generosity has resulted in the Gallery reaching this point in the campaign," the Mayor said.
The Mayor said, "The painting could have been lost to Geelong for ever if there hadn't been such a rapid and generous response from the local community."
The City of Greater Geelong Council donated $600,000 to the appeal, the Federal Government provided a total of
$800,000 and the State Government offered up to $1.5 million on a dollar for dollar basis matching money raised
by the community.
Geelong Gallery Director Geoffrey Edwards said, "The offer of this painting was the most spectacular opportunity that
has come Geelong's way at this or any other time." Mr Edwards said the Gallery was proceeding with the purchase on the basis of a short term loan in order to conclude the sale.
"The fund raising campaign has been enormously successful but we still need to secure more donations to cover the
full amount," Mr Edwards said. "Those who contribute in the next few weeks can do so with the certainty that the painting has been secured," he added.
Considered the most significant painter of Australia's colonial period, the Austrian-born Eugene von Guérard painted
several landscapes in the Geelong region during the period of the Victorian gold rush. View of Geelong was painted in
1856 and shows the view north to Corio Bay from a vantage point in the vicinity of Highton.
| VIEW OF GEELONG - WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! |
The Geelong Gallery has purchased View of Geelong but still needs public contributions.
To make sure of securing this colonial masterpiece the Geelong Gallery arranged a short term loan to make up the total purchase price. So the Gallery is still welcoming public contributions toward the campaign. Which means you still have a chance to be a part of Geelong's cultural history. Every contributor will be acknowledged when the painting is displayed at the Gallery and donations are tax deductible. |
