Detox your home
Free household chemical disposal service - it's safe and easy!
Saturday 2 February, 1.00pm to 4.00pm.
Every Home has them. Unwanted products stored in the house, garage or garden shed. They're out of sight and out of mind. Some products contain chemicals which can be dangerous to children and pets. You can't pour them down the sink, or put them out with your kerbside collection because they can harm the environment. Take the time to clear some space. Detox your home. It easy, safe and free.
Where do you drop them off?
BELMONT

WHEN GOOD THINGS TURN BAD, TURN THEM IN!
Certain products must be disposed of carefully. You can't pour them down the sink or put them out with your kerbside collection as they can cause long-term damage to waterways, vegetation, soil and the environment. They can also be harmful to your home and health. That's why you need to turn them in. Safely.
What type of items can you turn in? Motor batteries, batteries, fluorescent tubes, gas cylinders, motor oil, spray cans and paint tins can now be turned in for FREE.

WHAT CAN I TAKE TO THE COLLECTION POINT?
BATTERIES
At the Resource Recovery Centre, we give dead batteries a second life. Lead, sulphuric acid, cadmium and zinc can be harmful to the environment, but if disposed of properly, they can easily be recycled. Car batteries contain useful lead and plastics. Nickel Cadmium batteries are sent overseas to be processed.
MOTOR OIL
Oils are great for engine performance, and if disposed of properly, can greatly improve environment performance. The Detox collection facility recycles old oils for further usage, such as the production of low grade diesel. Meanwhile, empty oil containers can be transformed into a variety of new plastic products.
FLUORO TUBES
While they may seem harmless, fluorescent tubes actually contain small amounts of mercury, a toxic element. The amount of tubes that people use each year turns this small amount into dangerously high levels. At the Resource Recovery Centre, we look after that nasty mercury and while we're at it, we'll take the leftover glass and aluminium, and put it to better use.
PAINT
Painting is messy work, and in our rush to clean up we're often careless about disposing of the leftovers. But if we take the time to recycle paint cans, nothing goes to waste. The paint itself is recovered and mixed to create new forms of fuel, while the metal cans are recycled through steel mills. Dispose of paint tins and spray cans properly, and help paint Geelong green.
GAS CYLINDERS
Old gas cylinders can pose an immediate risk if left lying around and a long term risk for the environment. So when your gas cylinder fires its last barbecue, drop it off at the Resource Recovery Centre. After careful inspection we'll give your cylinder a new home for re-use. Those that fail the test are always welcome for recycling at the steel mills.
