Surrounded by its own parklands, Osborne House overlooks Corio Bay. The beautiful bluestone mansion has been used as a private residence, a guest house, hospital, army training camp, naval college, Shire of Corio offices and at one stage even had its own racing track to accompany the stables.
Built in 1858 for Robert Muirhead who emigrated from Leith, Scotland, in 1838, Osborne House was a two storey stone building of eleven rooms set on twelve acres on the bay front. It is thought that Mr. Muirhead named the building after Osborne House in the Isle of Wight.
After a full and colourful history, in 1948 the Shire purchased the Stables building and adjacent land from the Geelong Harbour Trust. Visit the Geelong Maritime Museum at Osborne House for a full history.
