Outdoor Dining Permit

If you are a registered food business and you want to offer your customers an outdoor eating experience on footpaths, laneways, plazas, wharves or on-street parklets, you need to obtain an Outdoor Dining Permit.

The City of Greater Geelong has developed guidelines to help hospitality businesses expand their service into public spaces. The aim is to create inviting, safe, and vibrant environments that enhance the local streetscape and contribute to a thriving community.

Application Process

  • Before you begin, please review the Outdoor Dining Guidelines below to determine which type of Outdoor Dining Permit is suitable for your business.
  •  If you want to talk to someone about your outdoor dining options, please contact our Place Activation team at [email protected] and request to discuss outdoor dining opportunities and requirements.
  •  For more complex applications, like those in laneways or parklets, you'll work with a City officer to assess if your site is suitable and to go through the design process.
  •  To apply, fill out the Outdoor Dining Application form and include all necessary documents, such as site plans and technical reports.
  •  Next, pay the annual fees.
  •  Once we review and approve your application, we will give you a permit that you need to display in a prominent window of your business. Remember, permits are valid for one year from the date they are issued.
  •  Please note that updated Outdoor Dining Application is under development. Please contact our Place Activation team at [email protected] to register your interest.

If you plan to serve alcohol in your outdoor dining area, it must be part of the Licensed Area for your premises. Be sure to check your liquor license before making a decision. For more information on liquor licenses related to outdoor dining areas, please visit the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation website.
