The L2P Mentors will assist learner drivers (16 - 23 years) who have no access to a car or a supervised driver to gain the required 120 hours of supervised driving experience.
The L2P Mentors develop and maintain purposeful, empowering, supportive and ongoing relationships with young people throughout this time.
Position responsibilities
Key responsibilities
- Act in the role of a supervising driver and help a young person build up 120 hours of driving experience prior to going for their Probationary Licence.
- Meet with the mentee (learner driver) with whom they have been matched for a minimum of one hour per week.
- Liaise with the learner driver and make bookings for driving sessions.
- Inform the L2P Project Officer of any car maintenance issues.
- Ensure that the car is left tidy at the end of each session and that the petrol gauge is not below ½ tank.
- Build a positive relationship with the mentee, providing friendship and non-judgemental support to the young person.
- A Mentor should be available to volunteer weekly for a minimum of one hour. The mentor may choose a suitable time to undertake driving sessions in negotiation with the L2P Project Officer and their mentee. The car can be accessed seven days a week between the hours of 7:00am and 9:00pm (or 10:00pm during day light savings).
- Provide regular feedback to the L2P Project Officer.
- Adhere to all Council’s policies and procedures relevant to this position.
- Carry out other duties as deemed reasonable and appropriate to the role as directed from time to time.

Key selection criteria
- A current full Victorian drivers' licence.
- A current satisfactory Driver History Report.
- Good communication skills, including a willingness to listen and learn.
- Ability to motivate and inspire.
- Flexibility and patience.
- Good personal presentation.
- Ability to commit to a minimum of one hour per week for a minimum of 12 months.
- Ability to attend booked driving session.
- Be able to safely carry out all duties and responsibilities of the role.
- National Police Check (to be initiated by the City of Greater Geelong).
- A satisfactory and current Working with Children Check (employee or volunteer) is required throughout your engagement with Council.
Additional information
- Satisfactory referee checks from two referees (one personal referee and one professional referee if the applicant has been employed within the last five years). Please supply names and contact details on the Application Form.
- Animals and/or children cannot accompany volunteers.
- It is vital that Volunteers do not discuss their own or their L2P mentee's personal issues or home situations with anyone. Any issues regarding your own or a mentee’s well-being should be reported to the L2P Project Officers.
- Mentor training is provided by Department of Transport. This includes one full day in-person training session. All mentors will also be required to complete Child Safe Standards Training provided by the City of Greater Geelong.
- A catch-up session for all Mentors is scheduled quarterly. These sessions provide opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing and mentor development. Attendance at these catch ups is encouraged.
- A minimum 4-star ANCAP rated vehicle is provided for use in the Program. Mentor vehicles are not to be used for the purpose of the Program.
- There are nine cars located across the region including central Geelong, Corio, Grovedale, Ocean Grove, Portarlington and Torquay.
- The City of Greater Geelong provides comprehensive motor vehicle insurance on the L2P cars.
- Any costs associated with Police Checks, Working with Children Checks and a basic Driver History Report will be covered by the City of Greater Geelong.
