Hitchcock Memorial Gateway

The Hitchcock Memorial gateway at the northern entrance to Johnstone Park was erected in 1925 as a tribute to noted civic leader, the hon. Howard Hitchcock.

Born and raised in Geelong, Howard Hitchcock was Mayor of Geelong from 1917 to 1922. The classical design of the memorial gateway is derived from the architecture of the English Renaissance and was designed by the local Geelong architectural firm Laird and Buchan.

Howard Hitchcock was one of Geelong`s most public-spirited citizens from a family noted for its benefactions to worthy causes.
