National Reconciliation Week

Monday, 29th May 2017
City of Greater Geelong Director Community Life Linda Quinn said the City was proud to support National Reconciliation Week and encouraged everyone in the Geelong community to take part.

“This is the third year the City has partnered with our local Aboriginal community to acknowledge and celebrate National Reconciliation Week which will include a Welcome to Country and traditional dance on the steps of City Hall,” she said.

Local projection artist Matt Bonner will be compiling a dynamic show reel of community images, artwork and historical footage.

“We are proud to illuminate City Hall with images that celebrate the strength, creativity and resilience of Aboriginal communities,” Ms Quinn said.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs annually from 27 May – 3 June. These dates mark two milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: the 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively.

This year’s theme Let’s Take the Next Steps focuses on encouraging all Australians to be part of the next big steps in Australia’s reconciliation journey.

Ms Quinn said the City’s event would be held against the backdrop of two significant anniversaries to be celebrated this year as part of Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision.

“This will be a celebration of the strength and continuing culture of our Aboriginal communities,” she said.

Projections will run nightly from 6pm to 11pm from 26th May until 4 June.
