All councillors are entitled to an allowance while performing their duty.
Under section 39 of the Local Government Act 2020, allowances are set by a Determination of the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal.
On 7 March 2022, in accordance with section 23A of the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal and Improving Parliamentary Standards Act 2019 (Vic), the Tribunal made the allowance payable to Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Councillors (Victoria) Determination No. 01/2022. The Determination applies to all Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Councillors in all Victorian councils. The Tribunal determined the City of Greater Geelong as a Category 3 Council.
The value of the base allowance for Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Councillors for Category 3 councils is set out below.
