Reconciliation Action Plan

In 2020 we proudly developed our first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan to honour the long standing relationship between the City of Greater Geelong and the First Nations community.

Expressions of Interest - Community Strengthening First Nations Grants

The Reflect RAP was an important first step in the City's Reconciliation journey and an extension of a commitment to walk with the First Nations Community.

The City developed its Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan around the four themes of Relationships, Respect, Opportunities and Governance, informed by consultation with Traditional Owners, the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and Working Group members.

Relationships

Strong relationships are at the heart of our work.
We are committed to ongoing, meaningful engagement with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. We create space for First Nations voices in local decision‑making and continue to walk together, listening, learning and building trust over time.

Respect

We respect the deep and continuing connection of First Nations peoples to Country, culture, language and community.
We support the protection and celebration of Aboriginal cultural heritage and acknowledge the importance of Truth‑telling, Treaty and Closing the Gap. We recognise that self‑determination is essential to achieving real and lasting change.

Opportunities

We work to create pathways that support the health, wellbeing and economic participation of First Nations people.
This includes employment and apprenticeship opportunities, growing cultural awareness across the organisation, and building a workplace that is safe, inclusive and supportive. Initiatives such as cultural leave and workforce development help ensure our commitments are backed by action.

Governance

We are accountable for the commitments we make.
Through our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (2021), we set clear goals, review our progress and build our capacity to do better. We proudly support the Uluru Statement from the Heart—Voice, Treaty and Truth—as a meaningful pathway towards self‑determination and reconciliation.

Walking Together

Our work continues to be guided by the four key focus areas of the Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan as we navigate the next steps in our Reconciliation Journey. We acknowledge and thank Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community for their generosity, guidance and patience. We remain committed to walking together — caring for Country, responding to climate change, strengthening reconciliation and shaping a more inclusive future for Greater Geelong.
