Construction of the smelter at Point Henry commenced in 1960 by the Cavalier Construction Company.
Smelting commenced in 1962. The smelter had a production capacity of 185,000 tonnes of aluminium a year.
Decommissioning of the site’s smelter and rolling plant remains on target to finish, under the close watch of the Environmental Protection Authority. Ground testing work includes drilling of more than 100 groundwater bores and more than 1000 soil samples bores, including underneath long-concreted areas.
