CCTV Safe City Network
By consolidating over a hundred video streams into a central platform, we can oversee all facets of the Safe City program and various place innovation initiatives from a singular central point.
The central CCTV software platform provides a level of control over all devices on the network, regardless of camera make and model.
The CCTV footage is regularly monitored by a dedicated team of operators, including Victoria Police and other law enforcement agencies to assist in their investigations and to enhance community safety.
Partnerships
The partnership with law enforcement agencies allows access the CCTV footage in real-time for a coordinated and efficient response to any incidents or criminal activity that may occur within the municipality.
The Geelong Safe City Network enables agencies to respond quickly and effectively to criminal activity, which helps to deter crime and make the city a safer place for residents, visitors, and businesses.
Furthermore, the partnership allows for regular communication and collaboration between key stakeholders to identify areas of concern and to develop targeted strategies to improve community safety.
Data governance and security
We adhere to strict rules around data governance and security.
The Geelong CCTV Policy, the Victoria Police Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) ensures a best practice approach. Noting these documents are still being finalised.
Management and benefits of the system
Management responsibility of the Safe City Network sits with our Smart City Office. This allows the existing and upgraded system infrastructure to be used for more than security, spreading the capital expense of an improved camera network far beyond the act of crime prevention and investigation.
The network is a powerful tool for citizen safety, efficiency and intelligence and gives us the ability to innovate.
Integrating co-located sensors with CCTV technology and data analytics brings us closer to achieving our vision of innovative urban spaces. For instance, analysing pedestrian traffic volumes at intersections throughout the day provides precise insights, enabling improved city maintenance scheduling and empowering informed decision-making for City employees.
Having real-time data on usage of public spaces means we can ensure Central Geelong and our townships are attractive, vibrant and active, while ensuring the safety and privacy of the public.
