Geelong's trees are a vital and valued part of our city and surrounding landscapes, providing significant environmental, social and economic benefits to the community. They enhance the liveability of our municipality and play an important role in shaping the unique character and identity of our neighbourhoods.
Our trees help to:
- shade the city and its hard surfaces during hot summers
- enhance our local biodiversity
- reduce stormwater run - off into rivers and the bay
- absorb air pollution (sequester and store carbon).
More than this our trees help characterise our city into what it is today: from the heritage values of the majestic Elm trees to the beauty of the lemon scented gums planted along Brougham Street the palms along Moorabool Street and the Hoop Pines lining our waterfront.
We are responsible for managing approximately 190,000 trees across the municipality, including street trees, trees within parks and reserves, and those located along reserves including those along our waterways and bike trails.
We are committed to protecting, enhancing, managing and maintaining our tree population for the long term benefit of our community. We are committed to improving our liveability through the planting of more street and park trees for the community to enjoy.
More about our urban forest strategy.
The City recognises that all publicly owned trees managed by the City of Greater Geelong are dynamic living assets that require ongoing care, maintenance and management.
Explore the Urban Forest Dashboard
The Urban Forest Dashboard showcases the work we undertake every day to create a greener, cooler and more liveable City.
It provides a transparent way to share information about our urban forest and the decisions that shape its management. We want residents, researchers, policymakers and citizen scientists to have access to the data we collect on the approximately 190,000 trees managed across our streets, parks and reserves, helping to build understanding, encourage collaboration and support informed decision-making.
