First Nations

The City of Greater Geelong is guided by the Local Government Act 2020 (Victoria), which strengthens relationships between councils and Traditional Owners and recognises them as essential partners in community planning, engagement and governance. We work with Traditional Owners, Registered Aboriginal Parties (RAPs) and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) as key partners in shaping our city. 

Our commitment is grounded in the four pillars of Relationships, Respect, Opportunities and Governance, which guide our Reconciliation journey and our work with First Nations communities. 

Programs and initiatives

First Nations NBN Box Art

The First Nations NBN Box Art Project merges First Peoples' stories, art and technology to celebrate the rich culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Geelong.

First Nations Grants

Grants to support self-determined projects and initiatives aimed at increasing health and social equity for Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, First Nations People, organisations and groups living in Greater Geelong. 

Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan

The City of Greater Geelong is located 75 kilometres south‑west of Melbourne on Wadawurrung Country, the region is defined by its waterfront at Corio Bay, the Bellarine Peninsula, the Barwon River, You Yangs Regional Park, wetlands, parklands and proximity to the Great Ocean Road.

Acknowledgement of Country

We Acknowledge the Wadawurrung People as the Traditional Owners of the Land, Waterways and Skies. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We Acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are part of our Greater Geelong community today.
