Rainbow Crossing

Launched in December 2022, the City of Greater Geelong’s permanent rainbow pedestrian crossing on Yarra Street, beneath the Westfield flyover, is a visible symbol of pride, inclusion and belonging.

The crossing celebrates the diversity of the region and recognises the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people in Greater Geelong. It responds directly to community calls for greater visibility and affirmation in public spaces.

The design is based on Valentino Vecchietti’s Progress Pride Flag, the most current and inclusive pride flag. Alongside the traditional rainbow colours, it incorporates the transgender and intersex flags, as well as brown and black stripes representing people of colour, including First Nations Australians.

As a permanent feature of the city, the rainbow crossing reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, visibility and creating welcoming spaces for everyone.
