At the 2021 census 30 per cent of Victoria’s population were born overseas. Victorians come from more than 200 countries, speak 260 languages and dialects and follow 135 religious faiths.

Geelong is a multicultural city, home and a welcoming place to people from many countries. 17.7 percent of our total population of 271,065 were born overseas. The top countries of birth include the UK, India, New Zealand, Philippines, and China.

Migration and migrants have been key to the development of the region.

Today, we have new arrivals from various countries like Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, South Sudan, Congo and Myanmar.

International students are also an important part of our rich multicultural fabric.

Our municipality has a range of social, economic and cultural initiatives to support connection, participation, innovation and creativity for people, groups and networks to encourage meaningful engagement in our local civic life.
