The Bellarine Arts Centre provides a vibrant arts complex that serves as a multi-purpose arts and cultural centre for joint use by Bellarine Secondary College, St Ignatius College and the regional community.

Offering an annual theatre Season, the Bellarine Arts Centre is a venue that brings the best in performing arts from around the world to Drysdale, theatre, music, dance, comedy and more.

The facility consists of a black box theatre - seating 200, studios, practice rooms, green room, dressing rooms, foyer, box office and kitchen. Spaces within the venue are utilised for classes - dance, drama, yoga, performances, multi-arts festivals, art exhibitions, outdoor events, meetings and conferences. The venue offers a range of spaces both indoor and out - to suit a multitude of needs.

The Bellarine Arts Centre Volunteer plays an important role by providing excellence in customer service to patrons at the Bellarine Arts Centre and offering appropriate service and information during events and productions.

Position responsibilities

Key responsibilities

  1. Greet and direct patrons as they arrive for events at the Bellarine Arts Centre.
  2. Usher patrons to seating in time for show start and assist patrons in and out of the theatre as required.
  3. Be the venues “eyes and ears” and advise venue staff of any safety concerns hazards or if problems have arisen or need to be addressed.
  4. Alert and assist staff and patrons, if any first aid or emergency situations arise.
  5. Assist in the service of refreshments before, during and after events as follows:
    • Set up kiosk for sale of items before shows and during interval.
    • Set up tea and coffee stations where required at events
  6. Clean and tidy kitchen including loading and unloading of dishwasher.
  7. Work closely with staff and other volunteers to ensure foyer and theatre are set up as required.
  8. Assist in the general cleanliness of the venue before, during and after events / shows.
  9. Refer enquiries to the appropriate staff member.
  10. Maintain knowledge of the venue and season program and an understanding of the key partners Bellarine Secondary College, St Ignatius College and City of Greater Geelong.
  11. Maintain a knowledge of the venue and season program.
  12. Assist with set up, pack up and the running of the venue's major events.
  13. Adhere to Bellarine Arts Centre Volunteer Procedures, Code of Conduct and to all Council’s policies and procedures relevant to this position.

Key selection criteria

  1. Good communication and customer liaison skills.
  2. Pleasant personality and good personal presentation.
  3. Ability to attend on rostered day(s) and time(s).
  4. Be able to safely carry out all duties and responsibilities of the role.
  5. Current Working with Children Check (employee or volunteer card).
  6. National Police Check (to be initiated by the City of Greater Geelong).
  7. Experience or an interest in theatre would be an advantage.
  8. A Food Handlers Certificate and experience in basic food service would be an advantage.
  9. Creative skills would be an advantage.


 

Rostering

  • Rostering will be determined by the season program and will alter as new shows are added to the program.
  • Volunteers will be contacted by phone or email to confirm rosters.
  • Regular meetings are held to discuss availability for upcoming events.


 

Additional information

  • Please be aware that public transport to the venue is limited especially in the evenings when many events are held. Please consider your personal transport requirements and ability prior to applying for this position.
  • You will need to supply the details of two referees - 1 personal referee and 1 professional referee if you have been employed within the last five years. Please supply names and contact details on your application form.
  • The City of Greater Geelong provides personal injury cover under our Personal Injury Insurance and therefore volunteers can work up to 90 years of age.
  • Animals and/or children cannot accompany volunteers.
  • It is vital that volunteers do not discuss their personal issues or home situations with anyone. Any issues regarding your own or a visitor’s health or wellbeing should reported to your Coordinator.
