Grovedale Neighbourhood House (GNH) is a not-for-profit community organisation, located within the Grovedale Community Hub at 45 Heyers Road, Grovedale.
Neighbourhood Houses welcome people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities to participate in low-cost social, educational, recreational, and support activities using a community development approach.
GNH is funded by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) through the Neighbourhood House Coordination Program to provide programs and activities that support community participation, capacity building, and inclusion.
GNH is auspiced by the City of Greater Geelong and is a program within the Community Inclusion Unit at the City.
Under the auspice arrangement, the City of Greater Geelong:
Takes on the legal and financial responsibility of GNH.
Supports the program aims of the DFFH Neighbourhood House Coordination Program.
Supports and recognises the community-based GNH Steering Group.
The GNH Steering Group is made up of local volunteers providing guidance and input into strategic functions of the GNH.
GNH manages five spaces at the Grovedale Community Hub providing opportunities for community participation in activities that promote wellbeing, connection and learning. The GNH office at the Hub is open four days per week and is staffed by a Coordinator and Administration Officer.
Position responsibilities
Key responsibilities
- Assist with the efficient functioning of the Grovedale Neighbourhood House.
- Complete assigned tasks under guidance of the GNH Coordinator.
- Support projects or programs as agreed with the GNH Coordinator.
- Adhere to all GNH and City of Greater Geelong’s policies and procedures relevant to this volunteer position.

Risk Management and Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities
- Understand and comply with Council OHS policies, procedures and legislative requirements relevant to the position.

- Manual handling tasks.
- Prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
- Dealing with difficult clients and situations.
Child safe
City of Greater Geelong policies, procedures and training support employees, volunteers and contractors to achieve child safe practices.

Key selection criteria
- Demonstrates a respectful and inclusive approach to everyone that comes to the Neighbourhood House.
- Respects and maintains Grovedale Neighbourhood House members privacy and confidentiality.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to safely carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the role.
- Current Working with Children Check (employee or volunteer card) or Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration.
- National Police Check (to be initiated by the City of Greater Geelong).
Rostering
A volunteer may be rostered on a daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis or as agreed with the Volunteer Project Officer.
Additional information
- You will need to supply the details of two referees - 1 personal referee and 1 professional referee if you have been employed within the last 5 years. Please supply names and contact details on your application form.
- The City of Greater Geelong provides personal injury cover under our Personal Injury Insurance and therefore volunteers can work up to 90 years of age.
- Animals and/or children cannot accompany volunteers.
- It is vital that volunteers do not discuss their personal issues or home situations with anyone . Any issues regarding your own or another's health or wellbeing should reported to the Volunteer Project Officer.
