Spills mostly originate from road users accidents or illegal dumping.

The risks include damage to the environment by materials entering the waterways and/ or creating a hazard for other road users.

Below is a list of vehicle spills that happen regularly:

• chemicals
• concrete
• diesel fuel
• dirt
• oil
• paint
• sand.

When a spill is identified we can install devices in the stormwater network which contain the pollution and prevent it from entering rivers creeks and the bay. These intercept the water born pollution and prevent it from entering the waterways.

Oil spills on the road can present a serious hazard to road users.

Cleaning up the spill

We clean up spills on the road by absorbing the oil with a coconut fibre or sand. Drivers need to slow down and drive to the prevailing road and weather conditions.

Small spills that enter our waterways can be prevented using long floatable absorbent pollution booms along with absorbent pads. These are installed on drainage outlets on drainage outlets after being notified of a spill.
