Owning a cat

Responsible cat ownership helps keep your cat safe and healthy while protecting local wildlife and supporting a happy, safe community across Greater Geelong.
Caring for your cat in the City of Greater Geelong.

Register your cat

To help keep your pets safe, you must register your cat or dog with us once they are 3 months old and renew this registration by 10 April every year.

Desexing

All cats must be desexed prior to being registered for the first time.

Cat curfew

There is a cat curfew in place in our municipality. This means your cat must be confined in a secured environment – that is inside a building or enclosure – on your property from sunset to sunrise.

Roaming cats

The City offers a free cat trapping service within the municipality for residents experiencing nuisance cats on their property.

Report a roaming cat online to request to borrow a trap.

Note: There are currently extended wait times for trap requests.

Cat adoption

Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) has a pet adoption service. All pets purchased through GAWS will be desexed and microchipped before you take them home.
