Hope Street Plaza Upgrade

The Hope Street Civic Plaza will deliver an upgraded public space on Pakington Street's Business Precinct.

Brick-paved footpath with street trees, a bench, and a public phone on a corner beside a road with traffic lights showing green; parked cars fill a nearby car park, with low-rise shops lining the street in the background.

The project

The Hope Street Civic Plaza project will revitalise the public space on Pakington Street between Hope and Yuille Streets, creating a safer, more welcoming and vibrant place for the community.

The project will deliver:

  • High-quality, accessible paving
  • New and improved seating
  • Upgraded landscaping, including garden beds and tree planting
  • Integrated public art reflecting the precinct’s multicultural identity

Why it is needed

The plaza is underutilised and in poor condition, with uneven paving, limited seating and tired landscaping, reducing safety and comfort. It is also an important meeting point in the Pakington Street precinct and supports events such as Pako Festa.

Community engagement

Engagement with multicultural community representatives (Cultura) and local businesses identified key issues and priorities.

Previous community consultation engagements included:

  • Cultura, at the Cultura Northern Community Hub, North Geelong, on 15 April 2026.
  • Pakington Street businesses representatives, at the Geelong West Library, on 20 April 2026.
  • Dedicated Businesses on-site visit, on 12 May 2026.

Project funding and timeline

This project is funded by the Victorian Government’s Multicultural Business Precinct Revitalisation Program ($250,000) and a $75,000 City contribution.

Upgrades to the adjacent car park are not included.

Works are anticipated to begin in October 2026.

Timing will be updated periodically.
