In October 2025, the Council approved the decision to make the automated bollards on Little Malop Street permanent.
These bollards restrict vehicle access to the hospitality precinct in Little Malop Street, located between Dennys Place and Moorabool Street.
Since their installation, they have significantly reduced vehicle movements, creating a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment. The automated bollards contribute to a vibrant and welcoming precinct for outdoor dining, events and place activations.
Hours of operation
The automated bollards will restrict vehicle access to the precinct daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 am the following morning. The bollards will be lowered from 4:00 am to 10:00 am to allow deliveries for traders and businesses.
Conditions of access
Access between 10:00 am and 4:00 am is restricted, except for emergency vehicles, designated private parking spaces, or temporary access purposes. A log of access PIN codes and usage times will be maintained to track vehicle usage and prevent inappropriate use of the automated bollards. Emergency services will have 24-hour access to all areas.
Deliveries
Deliveries should occur between 4:00 am and 10:00 am. For deliveries during the restricted hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 am, please use the loading zones available at 2 James Street and 116 Moorabool Street.
Bollard safety features
The automated bollards are equipped with warning sirens, lights, and signage to alert pedestrians and vehicles when they are in use. Additionally, they have a vehicle sensor that prevents the bollards from rising if there is an obstruction from a vehicle.
Need temporary access?
You can request temporary access to the bollards if your property is located on Little Malop Street and is directly affected by the automated bollards. This is necessary for activities such as repair work, maintenance, construction, or the delivery of bulky items.
Temporary access codes will only be issued when parking in a loading zone is not feasible or safe. These access codes are time-sensitive and will be deactivated after use.
If you require emergency access, please contact the City and speak with the Place Activation team.
