Our stormwater systems help manage rainfall by directing it underground. This prevents water from pooling in public areas like roads and footpaths, making them safe for everyone.
During heavy rain, our drainage systems can quickly reach their limit. When this happens, water that can't enter the drains may pool or flow overland, causing flooding in streets or even private properties.
Older suburbs often face drainage issues due to outdated systems that can't handle every rain event, especially flash floods.
Stormwater Studies
Over the next 10 years, we are conducting stormwater studies for each of the 25 catchment areas in Greater Geelong. These studies, while not required by law, will help us identify flood-prone areas and find ways to prevent flooding.
We'll use this information to discuss drainage improvements with the community. To learn more about these studies, please visit our webpage understanding stormwater in our region.
Reporting Blocked Drains
If you see water not draining after rain, there might be a blocked drain. You can submit a service request online, via the Geelong City App, or by calling our Customer Service team on 5272 5272.
