Lighting in Geelong

We manage street and public lighting across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.

We manage the provision of street and public lighting with the aim of:

  • Ensuring the safe effective movement of vehicular, cycling and pedestrian traffic at night
  • Discouraging illegal and anti-social acts
  • Promoting visual amenity
  • Develop a sense of place
  • Being a leader in practical urban design
  • Enhancing cultural activities

Street lighting

There are over 32,000 street lights across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.

All street lights are maintained by either Powercor or VicRoads:

New street lighting considerations

There are sections of our municipality where the provision of street lighting is neither practical nor appropriate.

Street lighting is considered on the basis of Australian Standards and our own Public Street Lighting Policy.

Public lighting

We own and maintain around 2,500 public lights, with a tenth of these solar powered.

Our lights are located throughout the Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula including some of these notable locations:

  • Geelong Waterfront
  • Little Malop Street
  • Green Spine
  • Geelong Botanic Gardens
  • Eastern Park
  • Limeburners Point
  • Johnstone Park
  • Kardinia Park
  • St Helens Park

In addition, our public lighting is located at:

  • boat ramps
  • parks
  • war memorials
  • carparks for leisure and recreation facilities, child and family health centres, community hubs and halls, and retail precincts.
  • shopping precincts
  • residential areas where mains power is not available or suitable
