Be waste - wise this summer

As the barbeque, beach and road trip season begins, here are some easy ways to be waste - wise over the holiday period.

Summer holidays are here! It's a time for catching up with family and friends having fun in the sun and enjoying those magic balmy nights.

At the beach

  • Pack your lunch/snacks in reusable containers. Reusable beeswax wraps are great for wrapping sandwiches in.
  • Avoid individually wrapped snacks. Buy in bulk and use your own containers.
  • If you're going to treat yourselves to an ice - cream buy it in a cone there's no waste that way.
  • Take three for the sea: When you leave take three pieces of litter that you see with you. If we all did this imagine the impact it would have.

Summer barbeques

  • Avoid the temptation to use plastic/paper plates cups and cutlery; just use your own people will help you wash up.
  • There's no need to buy individually bottled water; just use a jug of ice water and your own cups. This saves you money too.
  • For platters go to your local bulk wholefoods store and buy what you can unpackaged.
  • Leftovers? Avoid using plastic wrap where you can and opt for containers with lids.
  • Ditch BBQ wipes for cleaning and use newspaper or a cloth instead.

On the road

  • Pack your own food in reusable containers or beeswax wraps.
  • Eat in at cafes/restaurants along the way - rather than getting takeaway – it's a good excuse for giving the driver a break too.
  • Packing baby wipes is tempting for wiping hands faces or any mess the kids make but a wet face washer works just as well.
  • Pack drink bottles and top them up using water fountains at parks along the way.
