What to do with your food waste

Every week we receive queries asking when Geelong will have FOGO, also known as Food Organics and Garden Organics collection.

Compost Bin - Composting at home
Sharewaste - What to do with your food waste

We are working on providing this service, you can read more about it and more upcoming plans and changes to waste and recycling. In the meantime, here are some alternatives for those who can't wait to stop their food waste going to landfill:

Bellarine Food Scraps and Compost Warriors

Bellarine Food Scraps and Compost Warriors is a community run group who offer free buckets - with lids - to residents who wish to recycle their food scraps but do not want to compost at home. They will compost the contents for you, and even provide you with the end product if you would like it.

They have three collection/drop off points on the Bellarine Peninsula:

  • Artisans of Australia
    1792 Portarlington Rd, Curlewis
  • 16 Station St, Drysdale
  • 203 Country Club Drive, Clifton Springs

They also offer talks about composting to interested groups, from playgroups to gardening groups. Find them on Facebook by searching Bellarine Food Scraps and Compost Warriors.

City of Greater Geelong subsidised Home Compost and Worm Farm Program

This popular program is still going strong in 2024. Find out more about creating the perfect compost blend, as well as how to order your own home compost unit or worm farm on our composting at home page. If you have dogs or cats at home, don't forget to check out the Yard Art Pet Poo Composter, far and away our most popular offering!

Get in touch

We are sure there are other community composting groups and networks out there in Geelong. If you know of one, please email us and we will add you to this list. Thank you!
