Jan Mitchell’s Bird Man bollard is a colourful tribute to Morrie Jacobs Junior, celebrating his connection to the Geelong community.

Morrie was an ex-Mayor and the 1950s manager of the iconic Jacobs Stores, a department store founded by his London-born ancestor in 1852 that later became Myer. Rather than focus on his business or political achievements, Mitchell highlighted Morrie’s gentler legacy: his remarkable home aviary on the Esplanade in Drumcondra.

Originally the final bollard on the trail near Rippleside Park, the piece was relocated indoors after termite damage. It now continues to charm visitors, recalling the days when Morrie generously opened his garden gates so local children could enjoy the colourful, exotic birds every Sunday afternoon.

Bright, playful, and full of life, the Bird Man celebrates the joy Morrie brought to his community.
