2023 Jurrawaa, Wurri-Ki Culture & Art Materials: Tasmanian Oak, galvanised steel Wadawurrung Country Hovell's Creek Trail head, Foreshore Road, Corio
Created in collaboration with students from the Gordon, this seat invites viewers to reflect upon our ancient country with views across Limeburners Lagoon all the way to the You Yangs. This work honours the stories and teachings from the artist’s uncle, using the gum leaf motif to represent the smoking ceremonies where local gum leaves are used. The viewer is invited to sit within the seat, gently encased in the structure as it seems to float upon the ground. Situated between two large gumtrees, this is a place of peace, reflection, and contemplation.
Jurrawaa was a proud Aboriginal man with heritage connected to the Kurnai and Wotjabaluk people of Victoria. A well-respected artist within the Geelong community and a gifted story-teller and musician, sharing his culture was his passion.
