This striking mural of Willem Baa Niip, also known as King Billy, was created by street artist Cam Scale and launched in August 2014.

Willem Baa Niip was a prominent Wadawurrung man from the Geelong region, respected for his knowledge, strength and connection to Country. Wadawurrung people didn’t use written birth certificates, their names carried identity, story and belonging, rooted in Country and family. Willem Baa Niip was named by his father who believed he saw a Bunyip when hunting at Jerringot the morning Willem Baa Niip was born – Willem meaning home, and Bunyip meaning a mythical creature.

The mural not only celebrates a significant First Nations figure but also serves as a cultural reminder of the enduring presence, resilience, and history of the Wadawurrung people in Geelong.
