Better for Geelong compost hits shelves at Mitre 10

Tuesday, 14th April 2026

The City of Greater Geelong is celebrating a major milestone in its circular economy program, with 25‑litre bags of locally made Better for Geelong compost now available at Fagg’s Mitre 10 South Geelong and Wallington stores.

Councillor Elise Wilkinson stands next to a stack of Better for Geelong compost bags at Mitre 10 South Geelong joined by Amy Mallett and Jasmine Dagg from Mitre 10 and Jai Stonehouse and Satar Rahimi from the City's Waste Services Organics team.

The compost is made from garden waste collected in green bins across the region. Each year, around 35,000 tonnes of material is transformed into high‑quality compost at the City’s Anakie organics facility. This process keeps waste out of landfill, cuts emissions, and supports local jobs.

By choosing Better for Geelong compost, residents are helping to support a strong local recycling industry while improving the health of their own lawns and gardens.

The compost has already delivered great results in local community gardens, including the Barwon Heads Community Garden and the Geelong West Community Garden, where members have reported healthier soil and thriving plants.

Environment and Circular Economy portfolio chair Councillor Elise Wilkinson

This is a great moment for our community. Every time someone uses their green bin correctly, they’re helping create a product that goes straight back into local gardens, parks and sporting grounds.

Seeing our homegrown compost on the shelves at Mitre 10 shows how powerful a circular economy can be. It shows how the humble home green bin can create real products, real jobs and real environmental benefits right here in Greater Geelong.

It also highlights how our region is leading the way in sustainability and innovation.

Bulk compost can also be purchased from Lara Garden Supplies, Southpoint Garden Supplies in Torquay, and Wallington WRG.
