Council endorses new Community Engagement Policy

Wednesday, 27th May 2026

Council has endorsed a new Community Engagement Policy, strengthening the City of Greater Geelong’s commitment to clearer, more inclusive and transparent engagement with the community.

The policy sets out how the City will work with the community so people are informed, heard and able to take part in shaping decisions that affect where they live, work and spend time. It also supports the Council Plan 2025–29 goal to deliver better outcomes for the people of Greater Geelong.

A key focus of the policy is removing barriers to participation and making sure engagement reflects the diversity of the region. This includes hearing from First Nations peoples, multicultural communities, young people, older people, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ communities and people experiencing socio‑economic disadvantage.

At the same time, the City is committed to hearing a wide range of views and tailoring engagement activities so as many people as possible can take part, ensuring decisions reflect the needs of the community.

The policy explains when the City will engage the community, such as when developing major plans, reviewing services or seeking local knowledge. It also outlines situations where engagement may not be possible, including emergencies or operational decisions.

Five core principles underpin the policy: planning proactively, being inclusive and accessible, being transparent about influence, choosing the right engagement methods, and providing feedback and continuous improvement. These principles ensure engagement is timely, respectful, culturally sensitive and accessible to all.

The City’s Have Your Say platform remains the central online place for the community to view projects and share feedback. The policy also highlights the City’s efforts to hear from the community in-person and in the places where they normally spend time, so it is simple and easy for people to share their views.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

It’s important to have face-to-face conversations to discuss matters big and small that help shape our vision for Geelong’s future.

Greater Geelong is a creative and diverse city, and our community has innovative ideas for how we can make it an even better place to live, work and visit.

Charlemont Ward councillor Emma Sinclair

It’s essential that we reach out to all segments of our community to make sure every voice is heard in our decision-making process.

We want everyone to feel they can have a say on the things they care about and that affect them – whether that’s upgrades to your local playground or a big idea you have for Geelong’s future. It all matters.
