We are pleased to announce the opening of section one at Sparrovale Wetland Reserve Ngubitj yoorree on 23 September 2023 the City’s newest nature reserve in Charlemont.

Join us for the official celebration of this remarkable addition to our region.

Spanning 500 hectares Sparrovale reserve was acquired by the City in 2019 to manage stormwater impacts on the adjoining internationally important Connewarre Wetlands.

The reserve also provides habitat for a diverse range of wildlife from migratory shorebirds like sharp-tailed sandpipers to resident waterbirds such as our majestic brolga as well as many frogs and fish.

Wadawurrung Traditional Owners will welcome us on Country with a traditional smoking ceremony followed by activities that ensure something for everyone.

  • Bug Blitz a hands-on insect experience
  • Guided walks to discover the reserve’s rich history
  • Water Watch identifying our local water-bugs and
  • Nature group displays.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

Council is proud to have established a significant environmental area which increases the region’s biodiversity as well as being a major drawcard for locals and visitors.

To have the drainage infrastructure pest plant and animal control completed will ensure the ongoing protection of threatened wildlife and native plants.

Councillor Peter Murrihy - Environment and Circular Economy chair

We're looking forward to the future of the reserve as it transitions from agriculture to an area for conservation as further areas will be opened to the public.

Sparrovale Wetland Reserve Ngubitj yoorree is a special place in nature with almost 100 different bird species having been observed on site including the iconic brolga.

We encourage our community members to include Sparrovale in their weekend plans. There are spots to picnic bird watch or take a mindful stroll through nature.
