Final days to help shape the future of central Geelong’s Market Square Quarter
Wednesday, 31st January 2024
There are less than two weeks for community members to share their insights and ideas about the Draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan.
We have received 218 online survey responses so far and over 50 attended face to face drop in sessions to provide feedback on the draft masterplan, which seeks to guide development for the city block bound by Malop, Yarra, Ryrie and Moorabool streets.
Our Engagement team will be taking feedback in person from 12-2pm Tuesday 6 February at 111-113 Little Malop Street, Geelong. A second session that day from 5-7pm will be held in the Project room at Geelong’s Wurriki Nyal civic precinct at 137-149 Mercer Street, Geelong.
Community members can drop in to read about the vision, ask questions and have their say, with no need to register.
Those who would prefer to give feedback online can do so before Thursday 11 February at yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/MSM
The draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan proposes turning the block into the thriving heart of Geelong and transforming Little Malop Central into a more inclusive, accessible, vibrant and safe gathering spot.
It proposes a pedestrian ‘Eat-Street’ with outdoor dining opportunities for more live music and events, and an outdoor market.
Two new plazas to be designed in collaboration with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, improved pedestrian connections and a mix of different uses within the quarter (ie a hotel, offices and housing) are also proposed.

Mayor Trent Sullivan:
Community members called for more dining opportunities, a fresh food market or a supermarket, more public art, diverse shopping opportunities and the creation of external shopping experience or high street.
We want to hear if the draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan hits the mark or if there are further improvements that can be made.
Councillor Peter Murrihy, Brownbill Ward:
The block bound by Malop, Yarra, Ryrie and Moorabool streets is important for our region’s economic prosperity. The land is owned by private landholders and government, meaning strong partnerships between landowners, developers, local and state government, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the community will be needed for the final plan to become a reality.
