Geelong declared a Tree City of the world
The City of Greater Geelong has been officially recognised as a Tree City of the World by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.
In addition to making an area more appealing, trees are vital to reducing temperatures between 5-20 degrees Celsius, improving wellbeing and providing native wildlife habitat.

Mayor Trent Sullivan
The City is proud to be one of only nine cities in the country to be recognised as a Tree City of the World.
This solidifies our commitment to making Greater Geelong a greener place.
As a community, it is wonderful to demonstrate our commitment to protecting and enhancing our green canopy and we celebrate this accolade.
Councillor Peter Murrihy - chair of the Environment and Circular Economy portfolio
I applaud the City for being part of this program, which is an initiative of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation, recognising cities committed to ensuring that their urban forests and trees are properly maintained, sustainably managed and celebrated.
Being part of this select group of cities from around the world will allow us to share ideas and insights that will ensure we continue to see our trees and forests flourish.
Greater Geelong’s tree canopy coverage is approximately 14 percent with a target of 25 percent to be in line with the Urban Forest Strategy 2015.
This target aligns with our Sustainability Framework Action Plan 2020–2022, Environment Strategy 2020-2030 and Clever and Creative community-led goals.
