A renewed vision for Geelong’s vibrant waterfront is now open for public comment.

A renewed vision for Geelong’s vibrant waterfront is now open for public comment.

The Draft Geelong Waterfront Master Plan – which features 32 proposed projects ranging from small scale upgrades to major precinct redevelopments – was endorsed for community engagement at the August council meeting.

Building on the 2011 plan, it responds to changing community needs and growing visitor numbers, and identifies fresh opportunities for culture, business, and recreation.

The draft draws on feedback from more than 600 survey responses, listening posts, and government, education, business, tourism, and community stakeholders gathered in late 2023 and early 2024.

Five distinct precincts feature multiple proposed projects guided by the design principles of connectivity, environment, culture, and activation. They are:

  • Western Beach Restoration (Rippleside Park to Western Beach Boat Club) – honouring Wadawurrung heritage and environmental values with a cultural walk, stronger pedestrian and cycling links, and ecological restoration.
  • Convention and Creativity (Western Beach Boat Club to east of Cunningham Pier) – building on the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre as a catalyst for transformation, with a welcoming plaza for dining and retail, and upgrades to the youth precinct and western boat marine complex.
  • Central Celebration (Steampacket Pier to Royal Geelong Yacht Club) – creating more integrated public spaces with better pedestrian connections and event infrastructure.
  • Heritage Leisure (Eastern Beach to Eastern Beach Reserve) – making family-friendly improvements for increased accessibility and comfort, with more shade and seating, and expanded recreational facilities.
  • Limeburners Nature (Limeburners Point) – establishing clear links to Eastern Park, the Bellarine Rail Trail and shared path network, and reimagining the mineral springs.

The master plan sets a long-term vision for the Geelong Waterfront, with staged delivery subject to funding and partnerships with government and the private sector.

Mayor Cr Stretch Kontelj OAM

The Geelong Waterfront is truly world-class and we are so fortunate to have it in the heart of our city. It’s up to us to ensure this exceptional public space continues to thrive for decades to come by preserving culture and heritage, restoring the natural environment, and setting new benchmarks in design, sustainability, and placemaking. The 2011 plan gave us the Wangim Walk and laid the foundations for new investment, but it’s time for a refresh and a rethink. This new plan shows what’s possible.

Cr Trent Sullivan, chair of the Economic Development portfolio

We want to understand the priorities of the people who use the waterfront most. There is enormous potential for sustainable development, better connection and improved amenity, as laid out in the plan. Community feedback will help us decide where to start.
