Make borrowing your New Year's Resolution

Friday, 22nd December 2023

January is a time many of us use to reflect and reset for the coming year. Some of us may resolve to reduce our outgoing costs and save more while others may decide we want to reduce the amount of clutter in our homes and live more sustainably.

The good news is regardless of which of these appeals to you there is a simple way to achieve all in one action.

Borrowing items that you will only use infrequently or just the once is a great way to save money save space round you home and reduce the impact of the continuous demand for new products on our planet.

Across Geelong the range of items you can borrow for free or a nominal fee that is just a small percentage of the purchase cost is ever increasing. We’ve put together a list to help you get started.

Borrowing across Geelong:

  • Geelong libraries lend out more than just books! Those looking to live more sustainably can borrow seeds to get their garden started and thermal imaging cameras to check the insulation in their home.
  • Borrow or hire items you will not use very often. For example Norlane Community Centre has a Tool Pool where members can borrow items such as hand tools lawn mowers and wheelbarrows.
  • Toy libraries are a great way of keeping your kids entertained without having to commit to the cost or clutter or a continuous stream of new toys.
  • If you need an outfit for a special occasion you might be able to borrow what you need from friends and family. While not strictly borrowing if you can’t find what you need there is a wide range of online clothing hire businesses that stock everything from garden party dresses to job interview outfits.
  • For unusual specialised requests why not try your local online ‘buy nothing’ or ‘freecycle’ group? Everything from number shaped cake tins to Elvis wigs to fairy lights might be sitting in the cupboards of members who are eager to connect and help.

    One last benefit of borrowing:
Whatever you wish to borrow there is a good chance that you are going to come into contact with new people living in Geelong who have similar interests and experiences. Borrowing is a fantastic way to become more involved in your local community and make connections maybe even friendships with those you wouldn’t otherwise come into contact with.
