Municipal monitors report welcomed

Tuesday, 9th April 2024

The City of Greater Geelong welcomes the report by the State Government-appointed Monitors which reflects the significant work that has been done to enhance good governance.

The Monitors were appointed to the City prior to the appointment of Chief Executive Officer, Ali Wastie, to ensure good governance practices were being upheld.

Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan

I would like to thank and acknowledge the work of Municipal Monitors, Ms Prue Digby and Mr Peter Dorling. I am pleased to confirm that many of the Monitors’ recommendations have already been implemented.

They include a new CEO Employment and Remuneration Policy (including terms of reference for the CEO Employment and Remuneration Committee), Conflicts of Interest Policy, Sponsorship Policy and Councillor Gift, Benefits and Hospitality Policy.
The City has also worked hard to improve Council’s financial position and I look forward to the release of our Draft 2024/25 Budget later this month for community consultation.

The City is set to be returning a net operating surplus for the current financial year and I thank Ms Wastie and her team for their work in building a positive workplace culture.
Our community will see that Councillors have listened and taken on board feedback from last year’s budget process whilst improving our overall financial sustainability.

We continue to provide much needed services for our community and we are delivering an impressive Capital Works program.
Under Ms Wastie’s leadership a number of initiatives have been implemented that are already having a positive impact on culture and organisational performance.

I welcome the opportunity to continue working with Mr Dorling and newly appointed monitor Mr Mark Davies.

Council is committed to working collaboratively whilst representing our communities.
We are focused on delivering positive results for the community and while we have much to be proud of, we also have much to get on with.
