New appointments strengthen Geelong Major Events Committee

Thursday, 9th July 2026

The City of Greater Geelong’s reputation as a premier destination for world‑class events is set to grow even further, with two respected industry leaders appointed and one experienced member reappointed to the Geelong Major Events Committee (GME).

IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong Pro Series

Endorsed by Council at the 23 June meeting, Annie Callaghan and John Dickson have joined the committee, while Robyn Birrell has been reappointed for a further term of up to four years. Together, they bring extensive experience across tourism, hospitality, marketing, ticketing and major event delivery.

As a delegated committee of the City of Greater Geelong, GME is responsible for attracting, supporting and funding major events that enhance the region’s profile, stimulate economic activity and contribute to community vibrancy.

In 2024–25, GME‑supported events delivered a $93 million economic boost to Greater Geelong, reinforcing the region’s standing as one of Australia’s strongest and most diverse events destinations.

The committee backed a wide range of events that showcased the region’s cultural vibrancy and international appeal. Highlights included major cultural experiences such as Discovering the Impressionists at Geelong Gallery and the National Celtic Folk Festival, alongside globally recognised events including the Avalon Australian International Airshow, IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong Pro Series and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

About the new members:

  • Annie Callaghan, General Manager of Marketing at Moshtix, offers expertise in digital engagement, audience growth and event marketing across Australia’s live entertainment sector.
  • John Dickson, General Manager of Crowne Plaza – IHG, brings extensive leadership experience in tourism and hospitality, with a strong focus on visitor experience and regional economic development.
  • Robyn Birrell, reappointed to the committee, is a highly regarded events and arts leader whose ongoing contribution has helped strengthen Geelong’s major events landscape.

Geelong continues to stand out as a premier location for hosting major events, especially with the opening of Nyaal Banyul, the Geelong Convention and Event Centre.

We’ve built a strong reputation for delivering diverse events that attract audiences from interstate and around the world.

It’s an exciting time for our region as we keep building on that momentum and welcoming even more world‑class experiences to Geelong.

The new members will join existing external representatives, councillor delegates, senior City officers and Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine leadership.
