Geelong United Basketball (GUB) will be the new venue manager for Geelong Arena the region’s largest indoor sporting venue from Thursday 9 October for three years.
The City will continue to retain ownership of the arena but is transitioning out of day-to-day management responsibilities.
GUB will oversee venue operations bookings and programming with a focus on maximising use of the arena to meet the growing demand for both community and elite basketball.
The venue will continue to serve as the home court for the Geelong Venom WNBL team with strong support for continued public access and community engagement.
The changeover will support the sustainability of Geelong Arena by streamlining operations under a single sport-focused manager enhancing programming and providing stability for users.
Community members will notice an uptick in basketball-related events and activities being held at the venue along with expanded access to a broader range of programs and opportunities.
Both the City and GUB are working closely with all tenants and regular user groups to ensure a smooth and well-managed transition with minimal disruption to their operations.
GUB will honour all existing licences and agreements and negotiate in good faith for any future arrangements.

Geelong United Basketball is a well-established sporting organisation that has deep roots in the local community and proven experience managing basketball operations at both elite and grassroots levels.
As our region’s largest indoor sport venue Geelong Arena will continue to be the home of basketball.
This transition reflects Council’s broader vision to ensure that City-owned assets remain financially sustainable highly utilised and aligned with community needs.
It will allow the City to focus on broader asset planning and community infrastructure development while maintaining strong partnerships with sporting stakeholders.
