The Geelong Botanic Gardens has partnered with horticulture students from The Gordon to design and establish a new Hakea garden.

The ongoing project gives TAFE students practical, hands-on experience in propagating and cultivating Hakeas – a uniquely Australian group of plants from the Proteaceae family.

Last year, 40 Hakeas were planted in the new garden near the Botanic Gardens car park. Many of the selected species are rare or threatened and half were grown from seed by The Gordon students.

Known for their hardiness and drought tolerance, Hakeas thrive in dry conditions. With more than 150 species in a variety of colours, the genus' diversity allows for a botanically rich and eye-catching display.

The Botanic Gardens team is continuing to work with students on plant care and planning future additions to the collection.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

This partnership with The Gordon is a great addition to our Botanic Gardens and has given the community a vibrant new native plant display.

I look forward to seeing the collection of plants grow and I encourage everyone to visit and enjoy the new garden.

Environment and Circular Economy portfolio chair Councillor Elise Wilkinson

This project gives horticulture students real-world experience while helping us protect important native species.

It’s a great example of working together to support biodiversity in our region.

The Geelong Botanic Gardens is open every day of the year.
