Wednesday, 7th October 2026

Our region now has a permanent space for designers, creatives, businesses and industry to connect, explore design-led innovation together and showcase their work in the heart of Geelong.

As part of our 2026 Geelong Design Week, attendees toured Design Commons at 30 Gheringhap Street last night, met local creatives involved in the project’s delivery and learned about future opportunities in the space.

Supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria’s ‘Creative Neighbourhood Infrastructure Support program’ in partnership with the City, Design Commons will support year-round design activity, exhibitions, events and professional development beyond the festival.

The central hub is open to innovation and experimentation across multiple disciplines, such as architecture and urban design, circular economy design, digital and interaction design, social and service design, creative technology, design research and design involving community members.

We’ve also opened an Expression of Interest (EOI) process for annual residencies for local designers and creative practitioners.

Successful applicants will receive 12 months’ access to a dedicated space, allowing for practice development and collaboration opportunities. An allowance, facilitated professional development and opportunities to share work and participate in design events are also included.

EOIs can be made at online before Wednesday 4 November.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

The new design hub will strengthen Geelong’s international reputation as Australia’s only UNESCO Creative City of Design.

Design plays a critical role in shaping our streets, cities and townships, homes, economy, culture, environment and even community wellbeing.

We’re thrilled to open Design Commons, a permanent space that will foster design-led thinking to address social, environmental and economic challenges.

Design Commons wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of local designers, makers and creative businesses, highlighting the strength and capability of Geelong's design community.

We are proud to support pathways for emerging and established designers, help to keep creative talent in the region and attract investment.

I encourage designers and creatives to submit an EOI for the Design Commons Residencies which will provide unmissable opportunities to share ideas, collaborate and network.

Design Commons is more than a building - it is a place where ideas, creativity and collaboration come together, creating new opportunities for local designers.

Christine Couzens, Member for Geelong

The State Government is proud to support this new design hub that will enable Geelong designers, creators, businesses and the local creative industry to work together to make Geelong a centre of creative excellence.

The residencies offered by Design Commons will give local designers the chance to collaborate and enhance their skills, consolidating Geelong as a creative city.
