A new space for culture, community and connection on Pako

A brand-new pocket park for multicultural gatherings, events and integrated art is coming to Geelong West.
The underutilised space on the corner of Pakington Street and Yuille Street is set to be reinvigorated with public art installations, new paving, seating and greening and beautification works, helping to drive visitors to shop and dine along the beloved shopping strip.
Pakington Street’s rich multicultural identity will be celebrated in the Yuille Street Pocket Park and create opportunities for ongoing cultural programs to be held there, with the aim of strengthening inclusion, local pride and the precinct’s reputation as a vibrant community destination.
Developed with the Pakington Street Business Association, local traders and community groups as part of the Pakington Street (Geelong West) and Gordon Avenue Urban Design Framework, the new park will reflect the unique needs and aspirations of this tightknit community. Further engagement will be undertaken during the design phase before works start.
This project is supported by the Victorian Government through Business Victoria with a $250,000 Multicultural Business Precinct Revitalisation Program grant. The City has made a $75,000 co-contribution.
Minister for Small Business and Employment Natalie Suleyman
From Broadmeadows to Geelong, St Albans to Robinvale, and Oakleigh to Footscray, our state’s multicultural business precincts are vibrant hubs of trade, activity, food and culture.
We are supporting our shopping strips to be vibrant and safe - our small and family businesses are the backbone of our communities. When we back local businesses, we back local jobs and local families.
State Member for Geelong Christine Couzens MP
We’re proud to support multicultural traders and precincts – they are a vital part of our economy, and they bring local communities closer together.
This project will ensure Pakington Street continues to be a vibrant, accessible and inclusive space that supports local businesses, community events and visitor experiences.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
The beautification project will play a key part in attracting more visitors to the precinct.
’Pako’ is a jewel in Geelong’s crown, known for its village atmosphere, bustling shopping and hospitality strip and most of all, its celebration of multicultural diversity.
We want to create another welcoming, accessible and high-quality asset for the community with the Yuille Street Pocket Park.
We anticipate the park will stimulate the local economy by attracting cultural events to the space, increasing foot traffic and encouraging visitors to pause and explore nearby businesses.
We’re grateful to Business Victoria for seeing value in this project and the benefits for local businesses, residents and visitors.
