The redevelopment of the Shell Reserve changerooms to feature modern gender-neutral and accessible facilities will support future participation growth in football netball and cricket at Corio Community Sports Club.

The project involved the demolition of the existing changerooms and the construction of new facilities to ensure the Purnell Road precinct continues as a welcoming and inclusive place for all.

The construction of the modern fit-for-purpose changerooms follows on the back of last year’s unveiling of two new netball courts and new cricket nets at Shell Reserve.

Council proudly provided $3.081 million towards the redevelopment of the changerooms while the Victorian Government came on board in support of the project to contribute $500 000 through a Local Infrastructure Fund - Female Friendly Facilities stream.

Along with supporting current operations the redeveloped changerooms will assist the club as it continues to grow its membership and will cater for a surge in women and girls taking up football netball and cricket.

Ella George - Member for Lara

I welcome the developments and congratulate the clubs involved.

I’m so proud that the Victorian State Government provided funding towards the new female friendly facilities at Shell Reserve which will open up more opportunities for women and girls to play the sports they love.

Local sporting clubs and their home grounds are an integral part of our community - and our community deserves the very best modern and inclusive facilities.

Congratulations to the Corio Community Sports Club and Corio Cricket Club for all your hard work in securing this new facility for your community.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

This project is significant in supporting the Corio Community Sports Club as a place where everyone can feel comfortable valued and safe.

Participation in physical activity and encouraging people to come together in sporting clubs benefits both mental and physical health and for those reasons Council was delighted to assist with this project.

Women’s football and cricket in particular have grown enormously across Greater Geelong in recent years and we need to have the facilities to accommodate the increasing numbers in these sports along with supporting the club’s existing netball program.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken

This project has given so much joy to myself and former fellow local Windermere councillor Kylie Grzybek.

The Shell Reserve project is an excellent example of Council working closely with a local community in this case the Corio Community Sports Club to fund investments that support the introduction of female and unique all-abilities programs.

This wasn’t possible with the facilities that previously existed.

The new netball courts cricket facilities and changerooms all assist Shell Reserve to become a fantastic modern location and make the Devils a club of choice in the north.

This development is an important commitment to assist people to be active and part of the community in which they live.
