The Outpost receives $165,000 boost over three years

Friday, 10th July 2026

The Greater Geelong Council has committed $165,000 over the next three years to support The Outpost, providing funding certainty for a vital local service supporting people experiencing hardship, homelessness and social isolation.

On any given night in Greater Geelong, more than 1,500 people experience homelessness. Between 2023-24, 4,604 people received support for homelessness here and of those, 44 per cent were family and domestic violence survivors, 12 per cent were First Nations people and 9 per cent were young people.

As housing and cost-of-living challenges continue, The Outpost has experienced a 50 per cent increase in demand over the past two years.

The service provides meals every night of the week and three lunches each week, distributing almost 63,000 meals in the last financial year. Through Council’s 2026-27 Budget.

The Outpost will receive $55,000 each year to continue providing meals, practical support and connection for people doing it tough across Greater Geelong.

The investment recognises the important role The Outpost plays in supporting people in the community.

The Outpost is a lifeline for many people, providing not only food and practical assistance, but a place where people feel welcome, respected and supported.

This three-year commitment gives greater certainty for The Outpost to plan ahead and continue responding to growing demand for its services.

Council is proud to back organisations that strengthen community wellbeing and ensure support is available for those who need it.

Addressing homelessness requires a shared effort across all levels of government, community organisations and the broader community.

We call for bipartisan funding commitments ahead of the Victorian election for The Outpost and similar organisations, so they can continue delivering their vital work with confidence.

The funding demonstrates to disadvantaged community members that they are seen and that they too matter.

Council's support means that we can continue to provide nutritious meals and dignified service, with a focus on reaching local residents experiencing food insecurity.

We are deeply grateful for this ongoing commitment of support from the Council and will continue striving to be part of the solution.

The Outpost provides free meals, essential supplies and a welcoming space for people experiencing hardship.

The service operates every day of the year with the support of volunteers and the wider community.

The funding commitment reflects Council’s ongoing support for local organisations that deliver essential services and foster a more connected, inclusive Greater Geelong.
