The City of Greater Geelong is calling for government commitment to the next generation of rail infrastructure, with four transformational projects identified as priorities ahead of the Victorian election.

As one of Australia's fastest-growing regions, Greater Geelong needs a transport network that keeps pace with our expanding population, growing workforce and increasing visitor economy.

We’re advocating for investment in:

• Delivering the Armstrong Creek Rail Spur – connecting one of Australia's fastest-growing communities to the rail network, reducing congestion and providing a fast, reliable journey to central Geelong.
• Establishing passenger rail services to Bannockburn – supporting more than 100,000 current and future residents in Geelong's north and west with a convenient alternative to road travel.
• Reinstating the Geelong–Werribee rail line – restoring a direct rail connection between Geelong and Werribee, improving access to Melbourne, Avalon Airport and thousands of jobs while significantly reducing travel times.
• Redeveloping the Geelong Railway Station precinct – creating a world-class transport hub with improved bus interchange, better pedestrian access, multi-level car park and welcoming gateway to the city.

Together, these projects would improve connections across the region, reduce road congestion, support housing growth, strengthen access to employment and education, and encourage more people to choose public transport.

Greater Geelong is growing rapidly, but our transport infrastructure isn't keeping pace.

This is something commuters experience every day.

We need an efficient rail network that connects people to jobs and education, is direct between major centres, reduces congestion on our roads and provides a more sustainable way to travel.

With the Victorian election approaching, this is an opportunity for all parties to demonstrate their commitment to Greater Geelong.

These projects are planned, practical and backed by a clear case for investment. 

Now we need a bipartisan backing to get on board and deliver them.

The four key rail projects are part of council’s 2026 Priority Projects advocacy campaign seeking major investment to support Greater Geelong's continued growth.
