The City of Greater Geelong is inviting feedback from the community and stakeholders to help create a new Master Plan for Kardinia Park, cementing the park’s status as Geelong’s premier sport and recreation destination.

The development of the Kardinia Park Master Plan is a unique opportunity to meet current and future needs of the community, sporting groups and spectators.

The City is working with the support of the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust and all other tenants in the Precinct to develop a master plan that will set the vision and direction of the park for the next 10 to 20 years.

The Master Plan will outline a series of recommendations and initiatives that will be considered by the City, providing a blueprint for future management and investment opportunities.

Kardinia Park spans more than 22 hectares in total. The City of Greater Geelong manages 65 per cent of the this, including the open space, community sports fields, aquatic centre, and senior citizens building.

The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust manage the other 35 per cent including the Kardinia Park Stadium and plaza areas and the new northern plaza some of the cricket facilities currently under construction. The stadium currently attracts more than 400,000 people annually and will soon have capacity for 40,000 spectators.

The stadium and new development are not part of the Master Plan process. However, the surrounding areas are a key consideration and the Master Plan will consider how the stadium developments influence the use of the rest of the park.

The Master Plan will consider the planning for the South Geelong Urban Design Framework, the Waurn Ponds Rail duplication, and use of the park for the 2026 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony.

The parks assets and social infrastructure will be carefully assessed against contemporary standards and universal design principles to ensure they remain relevant and fit for purpose.

There is currently capacity for nearly 1300 car parks across the formal and informal parking areas and parking will be a key consideration in the development of the draft Master Plan.

The Master Plan will also consider recreation and biodiversity, with a recent study identifying more than 427 trees across the park (excluding the stage five redevelopment area).

Once the draft Master Plan has been developed, user groups and key stakeholders – as well as the wider community - will once again be invited to provide feedback before the final Master Plan is considered by Council.

Community engagement closes on Tuesday 31 January 2023.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

We want to develop a shared vision for the park for decades to come. Whether you use the area for walking, community sport such as netball, swimming, football or cricket, or use the park to attend major events – we’d love to hear from you.

Sport portfolio Chair, Councillor Ron Nelson

Rather than an ad hoc approach, we want to make sure this wonderful reserve remains the City’s premier sport and recreation destination as well as an asset for the whole community. Kardinia Park has a long and proud history, so we want to hear feedback from as many people as possible.
